Answers and sources

An answer from your files says where it comes from: the file and the place in it. You can open the source and read the passage the answer used.

How STYD answers

1. It finds the best passages.
STYD looks for the passages of your files that match the question, and keeps up to 8 of them.
2. It answers from them.
The answer is written only from those passages and marked with numbers such as [1] and [2]. It is written in the language of your question, whatever the language of the file. A short part labelled General knowledge, such as advice or a definition, can follow after a divider. The citations stay on the part from your files.
3. It says so when it finds nothing.
If no passage answers the question, STYD tells you instead of guessing.

Sources under the answer

Each source is a small label, for example contract.pdf · p. 4 · 12 Oct 2026: the file, the place in it and the day the file was added. What the place is depends on the file:

  • PDF: the page number.
  • Word, text and Markdown: the heading of the section. These files have no fixed pages, so there is no page number.
  • Spreadsheets: the sheet and the area of the sheet for notes, dashboards and text boxes. A figure computed from a table shows the source “From your uploaded files” and how it was calculated.

Open a source to read the excerpt. The original file is not kept, so STYD cannot open or download it: the excerpt is what remains. If the file was replaced or deleted since, the excerpt may no longer be available.

A passage read from a scan or a photo carries the note “Text recognised from a scanned page”, and a second note when parts of that page were hard to read. Check figures taken from a scan against the page.

Good to know

  • An answer looks at the best passages, not the whole file. A question such as “list every clause” can be incomplete. Ask for one topic at a time.
  • Every member who can ask questions in the workspace can get answers from every file in it.
  • Addresses in an answer are plain text. STYD never turns text from a file into a link or loads an image from it.
  • If a file contains sentences that read like orders to an AI assistant, STYD ignores them as orders and uses the text only as content. The file's details say so.
  • Like any answer, check the important ones against the source.
