Privacy and deletion
This page says what STYD keeps from your files, what it sends to its AI provider and how to delete a file. The Privacy Policy is the full reference: if this page and the Privacy Policy ever differ, the Privacy Policy applies.
What STYD keeps
- The original file is deleted once it has been read. If reading stops, it is deleted within 24 hours. Original files are not in the backups.
- The extracted text is kept, cut into short passages with a search vector for each, together with the file name, type, size, number of pages, who added it and when, and a short description written by AI.
- Spreadsheet tables are kept in a separate database used only for uploaded spreadsheets.
This stays until an owner or admin deletes the file or the workspace is deleted.
What is sent to the AI provider
STYD uses OpenAI to index your files and to write answers. In short: the text of your passages is sent to create search vectors; the start of a document, or a summary of a spreadsheet with the headers and up to 20 rows of each table, is sent to write the description; and to answer a question, STYD sends the question, the file names and the start of their descriptions, then at most 8 passages or the spreadsheet rows needed. Scanned pages are read on STYD's own server, and page images are never sent. Details are on What leaves STYD.
Deleting a file
An owner or admin can delete a file at any time from Settings, then Documents. The file and everything STYD learned from it are deleted at once, and the tables of a spreadsheet are dropped. If a table cannot be removed right away, STYD retries every 10 minutes. Deleted files can stay in STYD's backups until they expire: up to 7 days on the server and 90 days in the encrypted off-site copy.
A deleted file no longer appears in answers. A source in an older conversation then says that the excerpt is no longer available. Deleting a workspace deletes its files too.
